The 5-Minute AI Visibility Audit Every DTC Brand Should Run

Before you spend a dollar on AEO, run this manual check across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini to see whether AI already knows — or ignores — your brand.

By ClappX Team · July 8, 2026 · 3 min read

You don't need a tool to find out whether AI already knows your brand. You need five minutes, three browser tabs, and the willingness to read the answer honestly — even when it stings.

The check

Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini in three tabs. In each one, ask the exact question a buyer would ask right before they pull out a credit card — not your brand name, the category question. If you sell recovery supplements, that's something like "what's the best magnesium supplement for sleep," not "tell me about [Brand]."

58%

of searches now end in an AI answer instead of a link — this is the moment that answer gets decided.

Read what comes back. You're looking for one of three outcomes:

  • You're named, with a real reason. The AI mentions your brand and explains why — a specific ingredient, a review, a comparison point. This is the outcome you want. Note which engine, and move on to your next money keyword.
  • You're named, with no reason. The AI lists your brand alongside four others with no differentiation. You exist in the model's knowledge, but you haven't earned the recommendation — you're padding a list, not winning it.
  • You're absent. The AI answers confidently and never mentions you. This is the outcome that costs the most, because it's invisible from the inside — your team never sees it happen, they just watch conversion-from-search quietly erode.

Why the same brand gets different answers on different engines

Wait — ChatGPT recommends us but Perplexity doesn't even mention us. How is that possible, we're the same brand?

Common founder reaction, mid-audit

Each engine weighs sources differently. Perplexity leans harder on recent, citable web sources with visible provenance — recent reviews, comparison articles, Reddit threads. ChatGPT's training data has a longer memory but less real-time awareness. Gemini pulls more from Google's index and structured data. A brand strong in one and invisible in another usually has a source gap, not a product gap: the citations that convince Perplexity (fresh, attributable, third-party) simply don't exist yet, or exist in places these particular crawlers don't weight highly.

That's the actionable part. "We're bad at AEO" is too vague to fix. "Perplexity has no recent third-party source to cite us from" is a specific, fixable gap.

What to do with what you find

For the full step-by-step playbook behind each fix below, see how to get your brand recommended by ChatGPT.

If you're absent everywhere: start with entity clarity — a Wikidata entry, consistent NAP (name/description/positioning) across your site and profiles, and structured data that tells engines unambiguously what category you're in. Nothing else compounds until the AI knows what you are.

If you're named without a reason: you need third-party validation, not more of your own copy. One independent comparison article or credible review does more for AEO than a hundred pages on your own site — AI discounts brand-authored claims about the brand almost entirely.

If you're strong on one engine and dark on another: audit where that engine's citations actually come from (check the "sources" links Perplexity and Gemini both surface) and go earn presence in that specific channel — Reddit threads for Perplexity, structured data and Google-indexed reviews for Gemini.

Common questions

Do I need a tool to check my AI visibility?

No — the manual audit in this post takes about five minutes and needs nothing but the free tiers of ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. A tool like ClappX just automates the same checks continuously and ranks the gaps by dollar impact.

How often should I re-run the audit?

Monthly at minimum. AI answers change as models retrain and re-crawl the web, so a brand that's cited today can quietly drop out within weeks if a competitor earns more third-party coverage.

What if AI mentions my brand but recommends a competitor?

That's a ranking problem, not a visibility problem — you exist in the model's knowledge but aren't the answer. It usually means competitors have stronger third-party citations or clearer entity signals, both fixable with the same AEO fundamentals as full invisibility.
